ALGEBRA: Innovative waste bioremediation practice for the removal of toxic compounds with use of microalgae in the context of a circular economy

Certain microalgal species absorb toxic compounds from the aquatic environment in which they grow, thereby contributing to its purification. At the same time, microalgae can be used for biofuel production and in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications, provided that the desired components are isolated. The ALGEBRA project will investigate the removal of heavy metals from wastewater and/or natural surface waters in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace through bioremediation based on the cultivation and use of microalgae. The objective is to purify these waters and support the sustainable management and protection of the inland and marine water bodies into which they discharge. The analysis of data such as pH, CO2, and O2 using machine-learning technology will contribute to the development of a smart cultivation system, with the longer-term objective of predicting microalgal cell growth. The proposed approach can also strengthen the circular economy through the valorisation of the resulting biomass in a range of applications.
