At the Laboratory of Archaeometry and Physicochemical Measurements (APML), we believe that research experience should begin at the earliest stages of university education. The Laboratory actively supports the participation of undergraduate students in research and laboratory activities, offering them the opportunity to experience first-hand the environment of applied research and modern analytical techniques.
Undergraduate students may join APML for:

Internships, involving active participation in ongoing research projects and analytical procedures related to the APML's activities.

Undergraduate theses, on topics related to APML's research areas, analytical methods, and scientific equipment.
Indicative thematic areas include:
- Applications of archaeometric methods
- Physicochemical and elemental analysis of materials

- Radiological and dosimetric measurements
- Processing and evaluation of experimental data
Our aim is to engage students meaningfully in every stage of the scientific process – from experimental design and implementation to the analysis and interpretation of results. Students gain experience in laboratory techniques, data analysis, and scientific documentation within an organised and supportive research environment.
Student participation is always arranged in consultation and collaboration with the student’s Department and academic supervisor at their home university, in accordance with the regulations of the relevant institution.
Those wishing to gain experience in an interdisciplinary environment combining cultural heritage, materials science, radiation applications, and modern analytical methods are invited to contact the Laboratory by submitting a brief CV and a short statement of their scientific interests.
The Laboratory of Archaeometry and Physicochemical Measurements (APML) offers Master’s students and PhD candidates the opportunity to undertake their Master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation using the APML’s research infrastructure, specialised equipment, and scientific expertise. Interested students may pursue research in areas including, but not limited to:
- archaeometry and materials science
- physicochemical and elemental analyses
- radiological and dosimetric measurements
- advanced analytical techniques
- processing and modelling of experimental data
- experimental microalgae cultivation and its applications in environmental monitoring
- development and evaluation of smart-farming systems using analytical data
- prediction, modelling, and optimisation of processes in the natural sciences using artificial-intelligence techniques
Research is carried out using APML facilities, in collaboration with a APML’s Researcher and always in coordination with the Department in which the student is enrolled. Depending on the applicable institutional framework and the regulations of the relevant institution, an APML researcher may:
- serve on the three-member advisory committee,
- act as supervisor, provided that the relevant requirements are met.
Master’s students and PhD candidates hosted at APML may participate in research projects, contribute to scientific publications, and present results at national and international conferences. APML provides an interdisciplinary research environment in which cultural heritage, materials analysis, radiation applications, and modern measurement techniques are combined with rigorous scientific methodology and a high level of technical support.
Funding opportunities, including scholarships or remuneration through research projects, depend on the availability of relevant resources and participation in approved projects, in accordance with the applicable institutional framework.

The Laboratory of Archaeometry and Physicochemical Measurements (APML) welcomes postdoctoral researchers wishing to pursue independent or collaborative research using the APML’s infrastructure, specialised equipment, and scientific expertise.
Postdoctoral researchers may join APML:
- to conduct postdoctoral research in collaboration with a APML's Researcher,
- through national or international mobility and funding programmes, such as COST Actions, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), Horizon Europe, and Erasmus+, as well as other competitive or institutional programmes,
- through the joint submission of research proposals, with APML acting as the host institution.
APML provides access to specialised analytical techniques, experimental infrastructure, and an interdisciplinary research environment, encouraging collaboration in areas related to:
- archaeometry and materials science
- physicochemical and radiological measurements
- dating and analytical documentation of cultural and environmental materials
- development of innovative methodologies and research tools
- experimental microalgae cultivation and its use in environmental and agri-food applications
- development and optimisation of smart-farming systems through the analysis of physicochemical and environmental data
- use of artificial intelligence for the analysis and optimisation of processes in the natural sciences
The collaboration is arranged in consultation with the APML’s Scientific Coordinator and in accordance with the institutional framework and regulations of the Athena Research Center.
Postdoctoral researchers hosted at APML have the opportunity to:
- pursue independent research,
- participate in the preparation and implementation of research proposals,
- contribute to publications in high-impact international journals,
- participate in international conferences and scientific collaboration networks.
The possibility of paid employment depends on the availability and approval of relevant funding within approved research projects.

The Laboratory of Archaeometry and Physicochemical Measurements (APML) actively seeks collaboration with scientists from a broad range of disciplines, strengthening its interdisciplinary character and supporting the development of new research directions.
Researchers and professionals in fields such as Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, Materials Science, Environmental Science, and Computer Science may contribute to APML’s activities aligned with its research areas.
APML seeks collaborators for the implementation of funded research projects at national and European level. The possibility of employment and remuneration depends on the availability and approval of relevant funding, in accordance with the applicable institutional framework of the Athena Research Center.
Collaborators may participate in:
- the preparation and joint development of research proposals,
- the implementation of research projects,
- the publication of scientific results,
- the development of new research directions within the Laboratory.

APML maintains a database of expressions of interest, which is used when preparing new proposals and recruiting staff for funded projects.
