New Publication in Bioresource Technology Reports

Our Laboratory is pleased to announce its new publication in the international scientific journal Bioresource Technology Reports:

Kyratzopoulou, E., Malletzidou, L., Nerantzis, E., Kazakis, N.A., 2026. Multi-metal removal, recovery, and regeneration dynamics of Arthrospira platensis in intermediate-scale cultivation. Bioresource Technology Reports 35, 102904. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biteb.2026.102904

The publication presents results from the research project:

ALGEBRA – Innovative Wastewater Bioremediation for the Removal of Toxic Compounds Using Microalgae within a Circular Economy Framework”,

The study evaluates, at intermediate cultivation scale, the ability of the microalga Arthrospira platensis to simultaneously remove heavy metals from aquatic systems using a 30 L photobioreactor. At the same time, it investigates the recovery of the bound metals from the microalgal biomass through mild acid treatment and the potential for biomass regeneration following treatment.

The results demonstrated significant metal removal, with particularly high removal efficiencies for lead and zinc, while a substantial proportion of the bound metals was successfully recovered. The biomass also showed regeneration potential, with its response depending on the initial metal concentration.

The publication highlights the contribution of the Laboratory of Archaeometry and Physicochemical Measurements to the development of sustainable and scalable microalgae-based technologies for pollutant removal, biomass reuse, and the advancement of circular-economy applications.
