Our Laboratory is pleased to announce its new publication in the international scientific journal Journal of Environmental Management:
Malletzidou, L., Kyratzopoulou, E., Nerantzis, E., Kazakis, N.A., 2026. Towards circular bioremediation: Pilot-Scale assessment of Chlorella vulgaris for heavy metal removal, recovery, and biomass regeneration. Journal of Environmental Management 415, 130696. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jenvman.2026.130696
The publication presents results from the research project:
The study evaluates, at pilot scale, the ability of the microalga Chlorella vulgaris to remove heavy metals from aquatic systems using a 30 L photobioreactor. At the same time, it investigates the recovery of the bound metals from the biomass and the potential for its regeneration and reuse following treatment.
The results highlight the potential to combine heavy metal removal, metal recovery, and biomass regeneration within an integrated circular bioremediation approach.
The publication highlights the contribution of the Laboratory of Archaeometry and Physicochemical Measurements to the development of sustainable and scalable microalgae-based technologies for environmental remediation and the circular economy.
