CV
Nikolaos Kazakis received his Diploma in Chemical Engineering, with distinction, from the School of Chemical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in 2003. In 2008, he received his first Ph.D., also with distinction, from the same School. His doctoral research in Chemical Engineering focused on the “Investigation of a Bubble Column Equipped with a Porous Gas Distributor.”
Following the completion of his military service, he worked for approximately one year as a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Chemistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in 2009. From 2010 until early 2019, he worked as a Research Associate at the Laboratory of Archaeometry and Physicochemical Measurements of the Athena Research Center. During the same period, he also worked for approximately four years as an external associate at the Quality Assurance Unit of the Democritus University of Thrace.
In 2018, he received his second Ph.D., with distinction, from the School of Physics of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His doctoral research in Physics focused on “High-Dose Dosimetry, with Emphasis on Industrial Sterilization and Radiation Accident Dosimetry.”
In March 2019, he was appointed Principal Researcher, Researcher Grade B, at the Athena Research Center in Xanthi, with the research field “Dosimetry and Radiation-Based Analytical Methods.” In December 2025, he was promoted to Research Director, Researcher Grade A, in the same research field.
His research activity is primarily laboratory-based. His research interests include archaeometry; post-sterilization and forensic dosimetry; environmental, accident, and space dosimetry; physicochemical and luminescence measurements of materials using advanced diagnostic and analytical methods, both with and without the use of radiation; microalgae cultivation, with or without artificial intelligence for a wide range of applications and for supporting green growth; physicochemical and radiological measurements of materials in the agri-food sector; smart agriculture; and the analysis, simulation, and design of physicochemical processes, with particular emphasis on gas–liquid two-phase flow, bubble columns, and microbubble generation.
He has authored more than 85 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings. His published work also includes three theses, three book chapters, and several articles in online publications and general-interest magazines. His work has received more than 1,300 citations, and he has an h-index of 14.
Since 2004, he has been actively involved in the preparation, submission, implementation, and supervision of research projects funded through both national and European programs. He has participated in numerous national, European, and cross-border projects as Principal Investigator, Deputy Principal Investigator, or member of the project team, as well as in privately funded research and service-provision projects.
He also serves as a reviewer for international scientific journals in the fields of physics, dosimetry, archaeometry, environmental protection, chemical engineering, and medical statistics. He is a member of the Register of Certified Evaluators of the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation and the State Scholarships Foundation.
He has supervised student internships, diploma and postgraduate theses, as well as postdoctoral researchers within the framework of research projects, and has also undertaken teaching duties.
He is a member of EURADOS, IEEE, the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society, the Hellenic Society for Archaeometry, the Panhellenic Association of Chemical Engineers, the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Association of Greek Researchers, and the Researchers’ Association of the Athena Research Center.
